Instructions for extractions or surgery

If you’ve had a tooth extracted

  • Bleeding is stopped by pressure and time. Bite on the gauze for 1 hour, change it, then bite on the new piece for another hour, for a total of 2 hours. Minor bleeding is normal and expected for 24 to 48 hours

  • Take the recommended pain medication as soon as you are able to. Taking one hour before extraction is ideal. Next best is taking before the numbness wears off

  • Use a black tea bag to help stop excessive bleeding. Steep the tea, let it cool, then place the wet tea bag over the wound with pressure

  • Apply an ice pack to the cheek outside the extraction site to help with pain and swelling. Don’t apply for more than 20 minutes at a time. Alternatively, enjoy a milk shake with a spoon for your next meal after you’re done biting on gauze.

  • Starting the day after the extraction, gently rinse with warm salt water and let water fall into the sink. Cup of water in microwave for 30 seconds with a small bit of salt added is perfect

  • Starting the day after the extraction, gently brush any food from the surface of the extraction site. Vigorous brushing there should be avoided.
